FODDER CARROT

Fodder carrot belongs to the Umbelliferae family and is grown as a forage crop. The varieties in cultivation are biannual, producing a leaf rosette and storage roots in the first year of vegetation, and generative shoots in the second.

The carrot is a highly nutritive fodder, especially valued in the rearing of young livestock. Because the taproots contain a lot of carbohydrates, they ppositively influence the utilisation of non-protein nitrogen compounds. The root yield is arround 600q per ha, therein ca. 400-500kg of digestible protein, and 7kg of caroten, as well as large amounts of vitamin C. With its low soil requirements, it is all the more suitable for Polish conditions, and can give satisfactory yields even on sandy soils.

In addition to the high nutritive value of the roots themselves, also carrot leaves are a very rich source of valuable nutrients.
