PERENNIAL RYEGRASS
Forage type
A perennial grass species with a well developed root system. Perennial ryegrass is short, and forms loose tufts. It is a valuable component of all grass mixtures, both for pastures and grasslands. It is the most valued grass species; due to its excellent nutritive quality and palatability it is ideal for permanent pastures for all livestock. It tolerates trampling very well and is very aggressive - in mixtures it tends to outcompete other grass species. Perennial ryegrass is sensitive to summer draught spells and severe winters. It develops best on well irrigated, nutrient-rich soils. It is one of the most valuable grass species in terms of nutritive value.
Turf type
There are also turf types of perennial ryegrass, characterised by more slender leaves and less intensive growth. These are mostly used for the establishing of amenity and sports lawns, as well as for swards on well irrigated, nutrient-rich stands.
