MEADOW FOXTAIL
Alopecurus pratensis
Forage type
A perennial grass species with a relatively weak root system forming short underground rhizomes. Of all grass species, meadow foxtail is the earliest to start vegetation in spring. It is a frost tolerant species, able to persist even under a thick and long lasting ice cover. It is also tolerant to prolonged flooding, lasting up to 45 days. Meadow foxtail develops best on stands with unregulated water supply and frequently flooded ones.
It is quite sensitive to trampling, and therefore it is most suited for mixtures used to establish meadows on well irrigated soils.
