KENTUCKY BLUEGRASS
Poa pratensis
Forage type
A perennial, persistent, winter hardy grass species, belonging to the short grasses group. It has a well developed root system, and forms short underground rhizomes, which help it create a thick, strong sod. Kentucky bluegrass is used for pasture mixtures due to its high tolerance to trampling and grazing. It exhibits excellent digestibility and is rich in nutrients, especially carbohydrates, and hence it is eagerly consumed by livestock. It develops best on nutrient-rich soils.
Turf type
There are also turf varieties of Kentucky bluegrass, characterized by a finer leaf blade and a shorter growth habit. Bluegrass is a species particularly well predisposed for establishing amenity lawns, football pitches, golf courses and areas of special use. Turf varieties of Kentucky bluegrass are characterized by high persistence and improved sod forming qualities.
