ITALIAN RYEGRASS

Lolium multiflorum


Italian ryegrass is a tall, loosely tufted grass, with well-leaved shoots. It is the fastest growing of the commonly cultivated grasses, and re-grows very rapidly after cutting. It yields best on moderately wet soils with good structure, rich in nutrients. Italian ryegrass is a typical cutting grass, it does not tolerate grazing well. It produces high yields of highly nutritious, wholesome fodder, rich in carbohydrates and easily digestible. Italian ryegrass is sensitive to frosty, dry winters, in polish conditions it is usually biannual.

 

 

Hybrid ryegrass

 

Lolium hybridum 
Hybrid ryegrass is similiar to italian reygrass as a species, in terms of soil requirements and forage quality, but is more persistent, and lasts longer in the sward. It produces very high quantites of green mass of excellent quality and nutritive value.
